As the festive season approaches and outdoor event As the festive season approaches and outdoor events ramp up, entertainment noise becomes front of mind for many venues and councils. 🎶🎤

It also reminds us of one of our first major entertainment noise projects, back in 2019, when we were engaged by a popular local venue to investigate noise complaints following its refurbishment.

A combination of mitigation measures and source-level adjustments showed potential for significant noise reductions.

Fast forward to today, the venue is thriving and the nearby residents are happy.

A useful reminder of how targeted acoustic strategies can support vibrant entertainment while maintaining strong relationships with surrounding communities. 🎶💃🕺

Acoustics 2025 – Sounds of the Sunset Coast 🌅🎵 La Acoustics 2025 – Sounds of the Sunset Coast 🌅🎵

Last week, the Australian Acoustical Society hosted the annual Acoustics 2025 Conference in stunning Joondalup, Western Australia, bringing together professionals across environmental noise, building acoustics, vibration, underwater noise and - for the first time - ecoacoustics, thanks to the collaboration with the Australasian Chapter of Ecoacoustics.

Miguel de la Mata, Director of Acoustics Consultants Australia, was part of the organising committee, helping deliver a fantastic event. Miguel also took on the role of MC for the Conference Dinner Party, his first time MCing something other than his kids’ birthday parties. It turns out that all those years on stage playing music paid off! 🎤

In Miguel's words: "It was a fantastic evening, complete with a spectacular sunset by the sea at Perth’s Aquarium, where the dinner was held".

A big thank you to the Australian Acoustical Society and everyone involved for creating such a memorable and engaging conference. The team at ACA is already looking forward to contributing and attending InterNoise 2026 next year in Adelaide!

🚧 Managing After-Hours Construction Noise At ACA, 🚧 Managing After-Hours Construction Noise

At ACA, we know that many essential infrastructure and construction projects can’t always be completed within standard working hours.

Under Regulation 13 of the Western Australian Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997 (EPNR), any construction activity undertaken outside standard hours (7am–7pm, Monday to Saturday) is subject to additional conditions. This means a well-prepared Noise Management Plan (NMP) it’s an important requirement.

We’ve successfully delivered NMPs for a wide range of after-hours projects, from power pole replacements and road upgrades to major infrastructure works, helping clients manage risk, stay compliant, and maintain strong community relationships.

🛠️ Planning after-hours work? Our experienced team can help you navigate noise regulations, streamline approvals, and deliver your project with minimal disruption.

Sam's background is as impressive as it is varied. Sam's background is as impressive as it is varied. With a Master's degree in Audio Engineering, Sam initially dipped his toes into the world of acoustics through a very basic module. Little did he know, this would spark a passion that would guide his career path and eventually bring him to work with us here at ACA

Starting out in building acoustics, Sam worked for an agency in the UK, focusing primarily on large-scale projects in schools and educational institutions. His work involved significant noise reduction efforts, ensuring that learning environments were as quiet and conducive to education as possible.

In September 2022, Sam made the move to the Sunshine Coast in Australia, before eventually settling in Perth. Since joining ACA, Sam has continued to bring his extensive knowledge in building acoustics to the team, helping to tackle complex noise issues and contribute to our mission of creating balanced soundscapes.

We're thrilled to have Sam on board and look forward to the innovative solutions he'll bring to our projects!
Precision matters, which is why we use the highest Precision matters, which is why we use the highest quality equipment. One of the essential tools in our arsenal is a sound level meter.

A sound-level meter quantifies the amplitude of auditory phenomena, including noise, music, and various acoustic signals. It employs a microphone to transduce sound waves into an electrical signal, which is then processed by sophisticated electronic circuitry.

The instrument measures sound pressure levels in decibels (dB). For context, the auditory threshold is approximately 0 dB, whereas the threshold of pain is near 120 dB. The meter can adjust to measure a broad spectrum of frequencies or specific frequency bands, making it an invaluable tool in the realm of acoustics.

As acoustic engineers, this data is crucial for diagnosing sound issues, designing effective noise control solutions, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. By understanding the specific sound pressure levels and frequency characteristics, we can tailor our approaches to mitigate unwanted noise, optimise acoustic environments, and balance the needs of our clients and the people around them.

Acoustic engineering is a niche field – a small wo Acoustic engineering is a niche field – a small world where every expert has a significant role. The barriers to entry are high, requiring years of dedicated study, honed skills, and hands-on experience. As a result, the environment isn't so much competitive as it is collaborative.

At our company, we regularly engage in conversations with our so-called "competitors." We share insights, discuss complex challenges, and even refer work to each other. It's a system built on mutual respect and the shared goal of advancing our field. This industry thrives on technical expertise, and we believe that knowledge should be shared, not hoarded.

When we say collaboration is one of our core values, we mean it in the truest sense. Our team works closely together, pooling our collective knowledge and skills to create the best outcomes for our clients. But our collaboration doesn't stop within our team – it extends to our entire network within the industry.

What does this mean for our clients? It means that when you work with us, you're tapping into a wealth of shared knowledge and expertise that spans beyond our company. Our collaborative approach allows us to problem-solve effectively and deliver the most informed, innovative acoustic solutions.

In the world of acoustic engineering, collaboration isn't just a value – it's a necessity. And we're committed to fostering that spirit of collaboration in every project we undertake.

Let's introduce you to Miguel, the mastermind lead Let's introduce you to Miguel, the mastermind leading the acoustics team at our Perth branch of Acoustic Consultants Australia (ACA)!

Miguel's not your typical owner; he's built a remarkable 14-year career in acoustics. He's constantly learning and refining his craft, ensuring peaceful (and sometimes rocking!) soundscapes. His journey began in Peru, where his fascination with sound first took root. This passion fueled his pursuit of a Bachelor's in Electronics Engineering at the University of Sydney (the science whiz behind the calming quiet!).

But Miguel's expertise extends far beyond equations and charts. He's also an avid musician! He dedicated a year to honing his skills at the prestigious WAAPA (West Australian Academy of Performing Arts), focusing on Jazz. While it's been a while since his WAPA days, his passion for music continues to this day – he still plays in a Latin Jazz band!

Miguel's true passion lies in the power of sound and music. He believes that sound allows us to share cultures, stories, and experiences, and he's dedicated to sharing his rich Peruvian heritage with as many people as possible.

When he's not creating harmonious spaces or jamming with his band, you'll find Miguel spending time with his lovely wife and his two beautiful children.
