ACA staff were heavily involved with the success of an application to develop a 9 turbine Wind Farm in a rural location in South Otago, NZ. Their work involved inspections of the proposed windfarm site and surrounding areas to understand the local topography, wind conditions and locations of neighbouring residential receivers. During site visits ACA staff undertook extensive background noise monitoring assessments at sensitive receiver sites.
Technical noise assessment was undertaken in accordance with New Zealand Standard NZS 6808:1998 Acoustics – The Assessment and Measurement of Sound from Wind Turbine Generators, which deals specifically with the measurement, prediction and assessment of sound from wind turbine generators in the presence of wind. The assessment concluded that the proposed wind farm would comply with the provisions of the Standard.
Given some community contentions, the project subsequently progressed to a Council Hearing and ACA staff accordingly prepared a brief of evidence based on the technical assessment and presented this at the panel hearing. The project was approved and is now in operation.
